Smartphone Computational Photography in 2026: Where Each Brand Actually Differs
The hardware story of smartphone cameras has plateaued. Every flagship in 2026 has a similar sensor stack — a main sensor in the 1-inch to half-inch range, an ultrawide, a telephoto with optical zoom in the 3x to 10x range, and varying numbers of supporting sensors. Where the differences actually live is in computational photography — the software pipeline that turns sensor data into the photos people see.
I’ve been comparing the current flagship lineup — iPhone 17 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro, Galaxy S26 Ultra, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Vivo X200 Pro — across enough shooting scenarios to have opinions on how each brand’s approach actually shapes the output. Whether you like this depends on your reference for what a good photo looks like. If you grew up shooting on actual cameras, the iPhone aesthetic feels honest. If your reference is the Instagram-optimized look that dominated phone photography from 2018 to 2023, the iPhone can look flat or underprocessed.
Google’s approach: maximum information extraction
The Pixel takes a different position. Google’s computational pipeline is built around the assumption that the goal is to extract as much usable information from the scene as the hardware can capture, then present a final image that prioritizes detail visibility over scene fidelity.
The result is photos with more visible shadow detail, more saturation in muted scenes, and aggressive sharpening that brings out fine texture. The Pixel 10 Pro’s Night Sight remains the best low-light implementation I’ve used — handheld photos in genuinely dark conditions come out usable in ways that competitors still struggle to match.
The cost of this approach is a slightly artificial look on certain scenes. Skin tones can read as overly smooth. Sky gradients can show banding from aggressive HDR. Landscape shots in flat light can look more vibrant than the scene actually was.
The Pixel’s portrait mode has gotten genuinely impressive on the depth segmentation, particularly with hair and complex backgrounds. The bokeh simulation still doesn’t look quite like a real lens, but it’s closer than it was two years ago.
Samsung’s approach: tunable for the user
Samsung has, somewhat uniquely, moved toward giving users meaningful control over how aggressive the computational pipeline is. The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s expert mode lets you dial back the default sharpening, adjust the dynamic range expansion, and choose how heavily the AI scene optimizer should intervene.
The default tuning sits roughly between Apple and Google — more processed than the iPhone, less aggressive than the Pixel. The optical zoom story remains Samsung’s strongest hardware advantage, with the periscope telephoto on the S26 Ultra providing 5x optical that holds up well to about 30x with computational assistance.
What Samsung has done well in the past year is reduce the over-saturation that used to be the brand’s signature. Greens are no longer pumped to the point of looking radioactive. Blues no longer push into purple. The improvement is real and should be acknowledged.
Xiaomi and Vivo: the Leica and Zeiss collaborations

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s Leica modes are the most interesting thing happening in smartphone photography right now, in my opinion. The “Leica Authentic” mode produces photos with a deliberately filmlike rendering — slightly warmer color, gentler contrast curves, more natural-looking falloff at the edges of the frame. The “Leica Vibrant” mode gives you something closer to the modern computational look. Having both available with one tap is a genuinely useful product decision.
Vivo’s Zeiss collaboration has produced similar results from a different aesthetic direction. The Zeiss-tuned color modes on the X200 Pro lean into a particular kind of high-clarity, slightly cool look that’s recognizable across the brand’s recent cameras.
What makes both interesting is that they’re not just preset filters. The optics-brand modes affect the entire computational pipeline — how the demosaicing is done, how noise reduction is applied, how HDR is handled. The result is meaningfully different output, not just different color grading.
The video story
Video remains the area where the differences between brands are smallest. All current flagships shoot capable 4K video. All have stabilization that’s good enough for handheld walking shots. All do reasonable noise reduction in low light.
The marginal differences come down to color science (Apple remains the most pleasing for skin tones), microphone array quality (the Pixel does the best job of audio focus), and codec support (Samsung leads on professional codec options). For most users, the brand they’re already invested in will produce video they’re happy with.

For people choosing a phone primarily on camera, the honest advice is to look at sample images shot in conditions that match how you actually shoot — not the carefully selected gallery shots in marketing materials.
